The operating problem

Repeated imports and evolving classification rules can overwrite careful manual work. A useful financial review tool needs to distinguish the original transaction from the team's interpretation of it.

What we built

We developed a transaction-classification application with imported source records, rule-based categorization, and separate manual overrides. The interface supports reviewing records and testing classification changes before applying them broadly.

The implementation includes business-name normalization and multi-term matching to handle inconsistent descriptions. Keeping source data distinct from classification decisions makes reimporting and rule refinement easier to reason about.

What the work enables

The internal tool provides a reviewable workflow for organizing financial data. It is not an accounting certification, tax-advice service, or claim that automated classifications need no human review.

Reusable lesson

Automation should preserve a person's considered decision unless they explicitly choose to replace it.
